The Newman House is our house on campus for students (Catholic and non-Catholic alike) to stop by
and hang out. We always make ourselves at home! There's a kitchen with a frige full of food and a living room with couches
and two computers for students' use. The basement has a foosball table, a pool table, and an Xbox, and we have plenty of board
games!
Every weekend we host social events that are an open invitation to anyone. These events include
day trips to places such as New York City, the beach, and Baltimore. We also have events at the house such as game night and
ice cream socials. Once a month we do a service project in which we reach out to the community. These can include helping
out at the Milagro House (a house for single moms and their children), soup kitchens, and just cleaning up around the Newman
House. This year, we just started an annual Texas Hold'em poker tournament. Every year, we will be donating the proceeds from
that to a local charity or group that we do community service for.
Our biggest event is our Wednesday Night Dinners. Somebody signs up to cook for any given week, and
everyone is welcome to the house for a great home-cooked meal! On nice days we set up outside to eat, and dinner may be followed
by a game of volleyball, croquet, bocce ball, or even dodgeball! On Friday afternoons we used to play street hockey together.
Father Ray was our goalie, but he was reassigned as Director of Vocations for the diocese.
Our weekly events include Soup & Scripture on Mondays where we eat soup and sandwitches and discuss
the upcoming Sunday's readings. Tuesday is our Bible Study. Wednesday at 4:30 Mass is offered before dinner. After everyone
is settled down from dinner and after-dinner activities, we have a discussion group. Friday afternoons we have "Fast Mass
and lunch." Lunch is supposed to be leftovers from Wednesday Night Dinner, but since there hardly ever were any, Father Ray
usually ended up cooking something for us. If not, he got us pizza!
The Newman House is a great way to meet other people who share the faith. We have a great time hanging
out there together, and I know that I have made it my home away from home.
